KiwiSaver Market Overview
The December 2025 quarter saw positive outcomes for KiwiSaver investors, supported by strong offshore equity markets and favourable currency movements.
KiwiSaver assets grew to nearly NZD 140 billion by the end of the quarter, increasing by approximately $5 billion due to a combination of market returns and ongoing contributions.
Returns across multisector funds ranged from 0.7% for conservative funds to 2.8% for aggressive funds. Global equities outperformed, while New Zealand shares saw modest gains. Australian shares were broadly flat in local terms but delivered small positive returns for New Zealand investors due to currency effects. Defensive assets provided stability, with modest gains from corporate bonds offsetting slight losses in longer-dated New Zealand government bonds.
Over the long term, higher growth funds continue to lead. Over the past 10 years, aggressive funds have averaged 9.5% per annum, followed by growth 8.2%, balanced 6.9%, moderate 5.0%, and conservative 4.2%.
